What is a production book?

A production book is a comprehensive document that serves as an organizational tool for a specific production. It contains essential information that spans various aspects of the production process, including schedules, cast and crew lists, contact information, notes, blocking scripts, technical details, and other logistical elements necessary for smooth execution. The production book ensures that everyone involved has access to important data and can refer to it throughout the production stages.

In contrast, while audience seating arrangements and promotional materials are important for a show, they don't encompass the full range of information a production book provides. A script, although a crucial component, represents just one part of what is needed for a successful production. Therefore, defining a production book purely as a script or a promotional brochure would not capture the entirety of its purpose and functionality in the context of show production.
